The name of the oil is attributed to the province of Trat or Trat, which is one of the seventy-five provinces of the Kingdom of Thailand and is located in southeastern Thailand, adjacent to Cambodia. From here, Trat oil acquired a similarity to Cambodian oud, in addition to an incense-like tendency that gave it unparalleled luxury and beauty. Trat province is characterized by its densely populated forests, and it is one of the most productive regions in Thailand for oud and oud oil. Oud oil is extracted by cooking the oud in copper pots over firewood, which gives it its special luster compared to other oud oils for long periods, then distilling and aging it to be ready for perfuming.
