Pierre Puvis de Chavannes was a French painter famous for his murals, earning him the nickname "the painter of France." He co-founded and presided over the National Society of Fine Arts. His work influenced many artists, notably Robert Genin, and he assisted medal makers with his designs and suggestions. Puvis de Chavannes was a prominent painter in the early Third French Republic. Émile Zola described his work as "art based on reason, emotion, and will." Gaston Alexandre Auguste, Marquis de Galliffet, Prince of Martigues, was a French general, known for his role in suppressing the Paris Commune in 1871. He served as Minister of War in the Waldeck-Rousseau government at the turn of the century, which caused considerable controversy in the socialist movement, as the independent socialist Alexandre Millerand was a member of the same government, thus standing alongside "the executioner of the Commune."
