Ylang-ylang, or ylang-ylang, or sweet yannoun, or fragrant cananga, or aylang (scientific name Cananga odorata) is a tree of the Annonaceae family, generally planted around homes in tropical Asia due to its intense, sweet, intelligent fragrance reminiscent of hyacinth and carnation. Its origin is Madagascar, and it is spread in Java, Sumatra, the Philippines, Malaysia, and the Comoros. Its flowers are green but beautifully bell-shaped. Indians infuse them in coconut oil to make a perfumed cream with which they anoint their bodies and hair. These flowers yield 2% of a highly sweet volatile fatty oil by steam distillation.
