Pyometra in Cats (Brief Description) Pyometra is a serious uterine infection that threatens the lives of unspayed female cats. It usually occurs after heat due to hormonal effects (progesterone) that allow bacteria to grow in the uterus. It can be open (pus is discharged from the vulva) or closed (nothing is discharged, which is more dangerous). Common Symptoms (Brief): Lethargy, fever Loss of appetite Increased thirst/urination Vomiting Vaginal discharge (only in cases of open pyometra) Abdominal pain/swelling (in cases of closed pyometra) Treatment (Brief): Best and most effective: Spaying (ovariohysterectomy) + IV fluids + broad-spectrum antibiotics.
