They cited permissibility based on what Muslim narrated (2619) from Abu Hurayrah, may God have mercy on him, from the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, who said: A woman entered the Fire because of a cat she owned, or a cat, she tied it up; she neither fed it nor let it eat the vermin of the earth until it died of hunger. They said: The origin of the possessive pronoun is ownership, i.e., his saying: (a cat she owned). And what is owned and beneficial may be sold. See: "Kashaf al-Qina'" (3/153). Ibn Qudamah, may God have mercy on him, said: "As for the cat, Al-Kharqi said: its sale is permissible. This was also the opinion of Ibn Abbas, Al-Hasan, Ibn Sirin, Al-Hakam, Hammad, Al-Thawri, Malik, Al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, and the companions of opinion.
