They cited as evidence what was narrated by Muslim (2619) from Abu Hurayrah, from the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, who said: A woman entered the Fire because of a cat she owned, or a cat, which she tied up. She neither fed it nor let it eat from the creatures of the earth until it died of hunger. They said: The origin of the possessive pronoun is ownership, i.e., his saying: (a cat she owned). And what is owned and beneficial may be sold. See: "Kashshaf al-Qina'" (3/153). Ibn Qudamah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "As for the cat, Al-Kharqi said: its sale is permissible. This was also the opinion of Ibn Abbas, Al-Hasan, Ibn Sirin, Al-Hakam, Hammad, Al-Thawri, Malik, Al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, and the companions of opinion.
