And they used as evidence what Muslim narrated (2619) from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: A woman entered the Fire because of a cat she owned, or a cat, she tied it up; she neither fed it nor let it eat from the insects of the earth until it died of hunger. They said: The origin of the possessive pronoun is ownership, i.e., his saying: (a cat she owned). And what is owned and beneficial may be sold. See: "Kashshaf al-Qina'" (3/153). Ibn Qudamah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "As for the cat, Al-Kharqi said: its sale is permissible. This was also the opinion of Ibn Abbas, Al-Hasan, Ibn Sirin, Al-Hakam, Hammad, Al-Thawri, Malik, Al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, and the companions of opinion.
