They cited as evidence for permissibility what was narrated by Muslim (2619) from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: A woman entered the Fire because of a cat she owned, or a cat, which she tied up; she neither fed it nor let it eat from the creatures of the earth until it died of hunger. They said: The origin of the possessive pronoun 'her' is for ownership, i.e., his saying: (a cat she owned). And what is owned and beneficial may be sold. See: "Kashshaf al-Qina'" (3/153). Ibn Qudamah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "As for the cat, Al-Kharqi said: Its sale is permissible. This was also the opinion of Ibn Abbas, Al-Hasan, Ibn Sirin, Al-Hakam, Hammad, Al-Thawri, Malik, Al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, and the companions of opinion.
