The stories of the letter writers, which they wrote and were lost like them at sea, but they summon other letters, intersecting like the fates of these strangers, they are the migrants, or the displaced, or the scattered exiles, orphans of their countries that days have broken, turning their lives into a "puzzle" game.
There is no certainty in this novel, no one who killed a criminal, nor is the traitor vile. It is, like our time, a zone of great doubt, ambiguity, and the erasure of boundaries...
And the loss of the first places and homes.
What happens when we are unable to speak frankly? Some resort to silence, and others see no option but to write what they dare not say, and this is what happened to Huda Barakat's characters.
In Night Mail, the characters revealed thoughts that cannot be uttered.
Confessions that are not easy to make, and things that, despite being poured out, still contained a little lie, self-deception. How long can a person be honest? To what extent can papers keep their secrets without leaking into the hands of others.
Letters written by the characters without certainty of reaching their intended recipients, without the intention of sending them. They are justifications for actions they took, for cruelty they endured, for the impact of the past, for families who left an indelible mark no matter how much time passes, for moral and social deviations they were led to due to emotional neglect.
Night Mail, one of the most beautiful things I have read this year.
