Pongamia (Scientific name: Pongamia pinnata or Millettia pinnata) pods and seeds are available, known in some regions as the "Karanj" tree.
This tree is characterized by leathery, ovate woody pods, usually containing one or two dark brown seeds.
• Height: Reaches between 10 to 15 meters (and may sometimes extend higher in some environments).
• Leaves and Flowers: Its leaves are soft pinnate, and its honey-scented flowers attract bees.
• Environmental Tolerance: Tolerates high heat, drought, soil salinity, and even frost to varying degrees.
Uses of Pongamia tree:
Its wood is primarily used as firewood.
The tree's leaves are also used as animal feed.
When dried, the leaves are used to protect stored grains because their smell repels insects.
The leaves are plowed into the soil and used as green manure, and as mulch around the base of trees, and they enrich nitrogen-poor soil.
The tree's seed oil is used as a lubricant.
The Indian beech tree also works to reduce the problem of global warming, especially air pollution.
