The Meadows of Gold 1-4 Authored by Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Ali al-Masudi The book (The Meadows of Gold) is considered one of the most important historical sources for the Islamic Middle Ages. Its author, Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Ali al-Masudi (died 346 AH), compiled the book in four parts, detailing the history of time. He began by describing the Earth's geography, its cities, wonders, depths, mountains, rivers, unique minerals, and various water sources, along with the history of its magnificent structures and prominent settlements. He then followed this with accounts of ancient kings, vanished nations, past centuries, and extinct communities, varying in their ethnicities, types, and religions. He included their wisdom, the sayings of their philosophers, and the histories of their kings and emperors, up to the accounts of prophets, messengers, and the pious, until God honored Muhammad, His prophet, with his message (peace be upon him). Al-Masudi narrated his birth, upbringing, mission, migration, military campaigns, and expeditions until his death, followed by the succession of the Caliphate. He then appended his book (The Middle) concerning historical accounts and events that occurred in past years, from the beginning of creation until the time the book was completed and the era in which the historian Al-Masudi lived. After finishing these two books, he felt it was his duty to follow them with a book that was both geographical and historical. Al-Masudi explained the reason that led him to write this book, saying: "So we decided to summarize what we have elaborated in a concise book, which we will include along with what is in those two books and other types of knowledge and accounts of past nations and bygone eras that were not previously mentioned in them." Based on the foregoing, this book is considered an expressive portrayal of the time period in which Al-Masudi lived and the scientific, historical, and intellectual issues that concerned peoples. This is especially true since Al-Masudi relied in his writing on his travels and observations around the world, journeys during which he exposed his life to various dangers in the service of science and knowledge. He also drew and extracted the material for his topics and accounts from important historical and geographical books, to the extent that the book is now housed in the most famous world libraries that give special attention to preserving rare and timeless manuscripts.
